Summer Season in Pilsen Will Belong to Children This Year

The statue of Spejbl and Hurvínek in Pilsen

Many people associate Pilsen with a visit to a brewery, but not everyone knows how diverse the offerings are for families with children. Here, you will find a wide variety of attractions to keep children entertained in any weather. On top of that, Pilsen is preparing two major celebrations this year – the Hurvínek’s 100th birthday and 100th anniversary of the Pilsen Zoo. Whether you are planning just a one-day trip or a weekend stay, you can put together an itinerary tailored exactly to pace of your children. There will be time to play and explore as well.

Hurvínek Invites You to an Interactive Exhibition for His 100th Birthday

The Hurvínek Puppet simply belongs to Pilsen, almost like Pilsner beer. He is commemorated not only in the Puppet Museum, but also by several statues in the historical centre, as well as an adventure path around the Bolevec ponds. Moreover, in the middle of June, a special exhibition marking his 100th birthday will be opened in the Museum of West Bohemia. It will appeal to young visitors who may be just discovering Hurvínek’s world, and adults who grew up with the legendary duo Spejbl and Hurvínek. You can expect playful installations and the chance to become involved in the action, try puppeteering, and also take a look behind the scenes of the art of puppetry.

Pilsen Zoo Will Celebrate its Centenary as Well

The second to celebrate a milestone this year is the Zoological and Botanical Garden of the City of Pilsen, one of the most beautiful zoos in Czechia. It stands out for its terrain with varying elevations, which naturally replicate the individual biotopes, and a number of unique exhibitions. Here, children can encounter animals from all around the world, from the African savannah to the Asian forests. Right next to the zoo, you can find DinoPark Plzeň, where life-sized models of dinosaurs, fun elements, and a regularly updated programme are waiting for you. The combination of the zoo and DinoPark makes for an ideal full-day trip – the morning among animals, the afternoon in the prehistory world. You can use a discounted combined admission ticket.

Techmania Science Center

If you wish to add a little bit of exploring, head to the Techmania Science Center. Interactive exhibitions, experiments, and also a modern planetarium show how much fun science could be when you can experience hands-on. Children can try everything here and discover lots of things that aren’t covered at school. You will often end up staying longer than you originally expect. Don’t forget to make a stop at the 3D planetarium which, after the reconstruction, offers even more stunning journeys into space. Techmania will keep you entertained no matter the weather.

Relaxation at the Bolevec Ponds

If you’re already in Pilsen, enjoy relaxing at the Bolevec Ponds. The ponds and surrounding forests are beloved by both locals and tourists. You can find here sand ybeaches, playground, and easy trails for walking, biking, or riding a balance bike. It is an attractive place for swimming in summer, and for pleasant walks in nature in spring and autumn. From the ponds, you can also take a trip to the Krkavec Observation Tower.

Explore the Surroundings of Pilsen

For at least a half-day trip outside Pilsen, you can visit the Radyně Castle. The new castle manager has prepared a brand new exhibition for this year’s season, and children will surely enjoy it. A reward for the easy hike will be a view of entire Pilsen from the castle tower, and, of course, some delicacies to treat yourself to below the castle.  You can finish your day at the nearby Chateau Kozel. It is surrounded by a large park, perfect for a nice walk or a picnic.

Another place you should not miss is the popular Farmapark u Toma. You can find it only a few kilometres north of Pilsen. In this area with tall trees, many animals are waiting for you, and you can pet or feed a number of them.

Children will experience an unusual adventure in Nevřeň, where you can descend into a former kaolin mine. The educational path “Pod zemí” will guide you to the entrance, starting at the Centrum Caolinum Nevřeň (Kaolin Centre).
