A new exhibition at the Gallery of West Bohemia presents a representative selection of the paintings and drawings of contemporary Pilsen artist Vladivoj Kotyza. Although it traces his artworks over time, the focus is mainly on current works. The most prominent of these is represented by a set of five canvases, named An Atempt at a Portrait of a Spruce (Pokus o portrét smrku), which reach a height over 4 metres and embody a giant tree. The retrospective aspect of the exhibition is approached in an unconventional way – author’s paintings and drawings will take you on a journey from the present back to the roots in the 1960s, when he was primarily associated with the movement of the fantastic realism. His gradual transition to a realistic depiction of the urban and nature landscape does not, however, means merely a faithful copy of the reality. Through precision and the artist’s unique perspective, meanings that lie even beyond this reality are revealed in the paintings. In many of the artist’s recent drawings, created directly outdoors, you can recognize familiar places, such as the Bolevec Ponds, the Berounka and Mže valleys, the surroundings of the Žebrácký stream, and the landscape of Šumava.
- You can visit the exhibition also with its curator Peter Jindra and the author himself, Vladivoj Kotyza, on Thursday 28th August from 5 pm and Thursday 18th September from 5 pm as well.
- The accompanying programme also includes workhops for children and parents, where you can devote yourself to creating of nature and landscape motifs. The workshops will take places on Wednesday 27th August and Thursday 25th September, always from 4 pm.
