Selected works by the Czech graphic designer Aleš Najbrt can be seen in the “13” exhibition hall of the Gallery of West Bohemia. Aleš Najbrt is inseparably connected to Studio Najbrt which creates the visual identity of many institutions, cities, companies and events, including the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, Czech Philharmonic and National Gallery. You can know him also as the author of plenty of film and theatre posters, book designs and other styles. The exhibition focuses primarily on his free creation, to which he is finding his way back once again after many years – unique lithographs. Although they are based on art of calligraphy, they are not a pure imitation of the Asian method of traditional handwriting, but rather an accent on gesture, spontaneity and contemplation. What is admirable is not only the final result, but also the creative process in which the author chooses toner mixed in alcohol as the art medium. He applies it to stones with Japanese brushes and newly also with oil chalks. The overall expression is intensified by the red colour, which the artist uses to disrupt the otherwise steady black-and-white combination. Every work leaves room for your own interpretation and discovery of new perspectives and contexts, which is why none of the paintings has a name. Thus, you can go on unexpected adventures with the author himself and let yourself be surprised by the thoughts that emerge in your mind during your observation.
- The author Aleš Najbrt and the curator Karel Haloun will guide you through the exhibition. The guided tour takes place on Thursday 11th September at 5 pm.
